Introduction

The University of St. Andrews was founded in 1413, making it the oldest in Scotland and the third oldest in the United Kingdom. The town of St. Andrews is small, beautiful and historic. It has a population of 16,000, is situated on its own sheltered bay along the Fife coast, and is full of old buildings, city walls, shops and houses dating back as far as the 6th Century AD. With the Grampian mountains as a backdrop, skiing at Glenshee or the Cairngorms is a short drive away.
